LADIES' GOSSIP.

A COSMOPOLITAN HIGH SCHOOL. With the assistance of British and American associations much was being done for education in Palestine even in the days ol Turkish domination, and recently the progress has been rapid. The mixture of nationalities in Jerusalem is shown in the composition of the pupils of the British High School for girls, 200 in number. They comprise Jews, Arabs, Greeks, Russians, Armenians, Persians, Montenegrins, Bulgarians, French, English and American. In age they range from five year olds in the kindergarten to students of twenty preparing for University examinations. The school is a sort of microcosm of the League of Nations. WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN BURMAH. The Legislative Council of Burma has declared in favour of woman franchise to be granted on the same terms as that for men. The Council in making their commendation referred with justice to “the advanced status of the women of Burma.” Burmese women form an exception to those of Eastern races generally in the amount of social freedom and economic quality they enjoy, and in their mental alertness and independence. WOMEN TRAM GAR CONDUCTORS. The Paris Municipal Council has decided that women tram car conductors must go. However, efforts are to be made to find employment in the depots for such as desire to remain in the service. A NOTABLE WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE. The recently held Triennial Convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, which met in London, was a most interesting gathering. About 400 delegates attended from over 40 countries, India, Burma, Japan, and other Eastern lands being represented as well as those ot European races. One of the most interesting persons present was Madam Yajima, one of the Japanese delegates, who at 88 years of age performed the long journey from her native land by way of America and the Atlantic. She celebrated her 88th birthday during the Conference, and was presented with a silver bowl filled with spring flowers, and several boquets, among which cherry blossoms ware prominent. A WOMAN’S RIGHT TO USE HER MAIDEN NAME. An important decision on this point was lately given by a London Magistrate on the occasion of a lady, a professional music teacher, being charged with giving a fake name, —her maiden instead of her married one —when making an application for the registration of the National Sanatorium for the Blind. It was suggested that her motive was that under her married name she would have had no chance of success. The magistrate held that a person who had acquired a name by renutation was entitled to use that name, and that therefore tlie lady being known professionally under her maiden name could not be held to have broken the law. Accordingly the summons was dismissed. DOORS AMD WINDOWS TAXED. In war wasted Roumama taxes are heavy. The Government has recently imposed a tax on doors and windows, on firearms and dogs used for sport, on all luxury articles, on animals, and on furnished apartments and rents. HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS. To keep a spare bed well aired, remove the sheets and put a freshly-filled hot-water bottle between the blankets each day. When a visitor is expected, it is only necessary to air the sheets. A simple way to poach an egg is to turn it into an old teacup in which a piece of butter has been placed, l’ut the cup in a small pan of boiling water; then the erg will be ready to take rp n five minutes. Varnish applied to the soles of shoes will not only keep out the damp, but render them more durable. The soles should be covered with a coat of varnish and allowed to dry. This process should be repeated three times. After a certain amount of use, canebottom chairs begin to sag badly. Providing most of the strips are unbroken, there is no need to have the chair reseated, which is an expensive business nowadays. Turn the chair upside down and, using

very hot water, thoroughly soak the canewo;x. It is a good plan u> seize the opportunity to wasli the cane with soap if it is duly. Do not huny the bu-iness, as the i >e:i is to get the .‘trips as wet as possible. When the cane feels softened by the moisture, put tiie chair out of doors. In bad weather, place it between two doors, eo that it is in a strung draught. As the canes dry they will tighten up wonderfully, ami the chair will finally be in good condition. W lute furs can lie cleaned with powdered magnesia. Linings can be freshened and c.earned with a weak solution of ammonia and hot water. People who are susceptible to the cold should make a point of wearing loose c’oth--1,1 g- Loose garments are warmer than tight-fitting ones, not only because they allow room for circulation, but also because they permit a layer of air between the skin and the outside cold. 1 here are many de.icious ways of serving the homely cabbage, of which the following is one : -Remove the outside leaves, then shred the vegetable finely.
