A LAPSED HOTEL LICENSE

APPLICATION FOR. RE ISSUE REFUSED. TAL RANG A, Juno 10. An application was made at the annual meeting of the Licensing Committee to-day by 15. Prentise for an accommodation license for an hotel at Maketu. This was tlie license which was allowed to lapse last year by non-payment of the license fee, after being granted, to enable the application to be made for a license at Matamata. The application was then refused. and the ease led to the legislation of last session preventing attempts being made in this way to transfer a license. The application for the regranting of tlie license at Alaketu was opposed by the New Zealand Alliance and bv tlie police on the ground of the unsatisfactory state of the building and the demoralising effect, on the Natives, also that the total adult poulation of the settlement was under tOO. Mr Hampson. of Rotorua, in appearing for the applicant, urged the issue on the grounds of the popularity of Afaketu as a seaside resort and that owing to the absence of a license the population had almost entirely disappeared The owners had also undertaken to effect substantial repairs The committee, after a retirement, of one hour, decided that it was impossible to grant a license for such premises.
