WOOL SALE

FIRST OF THE SEASON IN DUNEDIN. CHOICE WOOLS IN GREAT DEMAND. The first wool sale that has been held here since the Government commandeer in 1916 opened in the Art Gallery Hall at 2

p.m. on Wednesday. There was a good gathering of Home and colonial buyers ; and prices all round must be considered satisfactory in all the circumstances. By 11.30 p.m., when a halt was called, some 75 per cent, of the lots offering had been disposed of. The sale of star lots held over will be resumed at 9 o’clock this morning. The sale drew to town a large crowd of woclgiowers, who watched the progress of the sale with the keenest interest till the close. The total offering of the combined firms was 9805 bales, as under: N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Go. (Ltd.) 532 Otago Farmers’ Co-op. (Ltd.) 865 National Mortgage and Agency Co. (Ltd.) 1016 Wright, Stephenson, and Co. (Ltd.) 2935 Stronaeh, Morns, and Co. (Ltd.) ... 820 Donald Reid and Co. (Ltd.) 1462 Dalgety and Co. (Ltd.) 1957 Todd Bros. (Ltd.) 220 Total 9809 Merinos were in disappointing condition, except for a few super lots, and prices as compared with Christchurch were, on the whole, lower. In halfbreds there was a good demand for well-bred ewe and wether w'ool of bold staple. Tliin-haired wools, especially hoggets, did not elicit the same keen demand. l’he feature of the sale was the demand for all showy crossbred lots, especially hoggets’, but no doubt the appreciation in values between this sale and the last Christchurch auction can be accounted for by tho lighter condition of the Otago wools. Tho difference in value between showy lols and medium to good lots was very marked. This result was attributable to the demand for early shipment to America. Pieces sold well, and were relatively deare* than fleece wools of the same qualities. Prices ranged as follows:
