There died at Opotiki recently Arapeta Tai-aao, one of the biggest chiefs of the Kawaitangohua, a sub-tribe of the Whanauapanui. Arapeta was nearly 100 years of age, and 60 years ago was a major in the British Army. At the time of Volkner’s murder he had buried his fourth wife, and he is survived by No. 13. At one time he ran a scow between Opotiki and Auckland.
