STRATH-TAI ER! HOTEL. DESTROYED BY FIRE. One of the oldest landmarks in Middlemarch, the Strath-Taieri Hotel, which was erected before the construction of the Ota-go Central railway, was completely destroyed by fire at an early hour on the 10th. 'The hotel was recently taken over by Mr C. Theycrs, of Alexandra, from Mr T. Quirk, and the new licensee will be a heavy loser. It is supposed that the fire originated in a stable at the back of the buildin*'' ; but. wherever it started, the flames -proad with great rapidity, and soon enveloped the hotel, which was a large onestore v wooden structure of about 25 rooms. Only a little of the furniture was saved, but all the occupants escaped unhurt. \ motor garage, rented by Messrs Ross arid Burke," adjoined the back portion of the promises, and this was also destroyed, including three or four motor cycles which were inside. There were also several motor cars in the garage, but these wore saved. Tt is understood that the building and stock were insured, but particulars are not available in the meantime. The garage and its contents were insured for £2OO.
