LAND SETTLEMENT
NEW HOMESTEAD SYSTEM. AUCKLAND, January 12. The inauguration of land settldlnent under the homestead system nor far north of Auckland is an early possibility. The Minister of Lands (Air D. H. Guthrie) paid a visit of inspection to a block of 14.000 acres between Swanson and Helensville, which has been marked down as a likely area for the purpose, and as the result of his inspection the Minister is satisfied that the land is well adapted for settlement on the new system. It is practically certain that as soon as the prelirninaiies have been completed a start will be made with this block, and the first experiment under the new system will be inaugurated. The land has been subdivided, but the areas into which it has been cut are not altogether suitable for the purpose. Another subdivision scheme will therefore be devised, and this and other matters will have to be considered by the Alinister and officials of the Lands Department, but once this business has been completed the present intention is to prosecute the scheme vigorously. It is also hoped that a simi’ar scheme will be inaugurated before long in the South Auckland district.
