GOLF.
THE OTAGO TOURNAMENT. The golf tournament at the Balmacewert Links was continued on the 3rd. Bright sun- ! shine prevailed throughout the morning, und tiie heat was excessive, while the course, already dry, baked rapidly, with the result that some of the greens became very fiery. All, however, were in splendid order, though many of the players failed to get the right strength, particularly in the short j approach shots. The conditions in the afternoon were ideal, the sky being overcast and the atmosphere cool, with the result that the play, particularly in the championship matches, showed a decided improvement. The following are the results of the day s events: — CHAMPION SHIP. First Round.—C. T. Irvine beat T. Id. A. Richards (Shirley), 2 up; B. O. Rutherford (Shirley) beat R, A. The annual New Year golf tournament at the Balmacewen links- was concluded on Tuesday. After the rain overnight, and with the dampness of t-ne morning, the greens were not nearly so keen as on the preceding days, and held the ball better. Some excellent play was witnessed, noteworthy being the two top pairs in the fourball match, Drake (St. Clair) and Wilson (Invercargill) returning 9 up on Bogey, and R. G. Scott and tt. W. Scott 8 up. 1 CHAMPIONSHIP. The play in the championship was excellent. In the semi-finals Rutherford was taken by Macbeth to the 17th green before he disposed of him, and Tosswiil took Wight to Hawthorn. The final, in the afternoon, between Wight and Rutherford, was followed by many interested golfers, a good many Sadies included. The play was of a good order for a final, and Wight’s form over the first nine holes was remarkable. Later lie failed badly with his tee shots going to Manuka and again to Roy’s, both of which holes he lost-, giving Iris opponent an opportunity to get even. Rutherford seemed as if he would take it, but lost a chance of winning both the 17th and 18th holes by missing fairly short putts, although his steadiness on the greens had previously been the subject of some remark. Semi-final: Rutherford (Shirley) beat Macbeth (St. C'lair) 2 up and 1 to play; Wight .(St. Clair) beat Tosswiil (Shirley) 3 wo and 2 to ploy. Final ; Wight beat Rutherford 1 up at the 1 8th green.
