Trainers are beginning to send -their charges along in view of the local spring fiX SoTar the two-year-olds have not shown anything brilliant. Oranga (Royal SoultCaderfee) is the most forward and has shaped well over a couple of furlongs. J Buchanan is paying a lot of attention to his team of youngsters The half-sister to Weary Willie by Bomform looks like turning out smart. Jollie Princess, who claims that good mare Jollie Fille as her dam, is one of the bestlooking three-year-olds at Ellerslie. Though she failed to pick tip a stake as a twoyear old, she should make good this season. Dovclet and Geoffrey are showing good form on the.track, and will have plenty of friends in their three-year-old engagements. Geoffrey started only once last season, when he defeated Dovelet by a head after a great race, so their next meeting should be interesting. , . , Blue Cross has not been idle during the winter, and should be ready for the Avondale meetingf. The son of Marble Arch has scored most of his successes _ on the suburban course. Last year he divided the Gun stake with Alteration. H Eva has a rather promising maiden in Rekatoa. Golden Bubble, who is in the same stable, appears to have come on a lot since being located at Mlerslie. VVinclorah. who has been off the race track for some time, looks a greatly improved horse. The King Rufus, gelding should be handy in some of the leading handicaps this season, as he stays on well. The Avondalo Club will have a record number of visiting horses this spring. The accommodation already booked is fair in excess of previous years, Slowooach appears to be all right again. He is to be given a few months' spell. Ben Deeley left for Sydney by the Riverina on Thursday last to fulfil riding engagements in Australia. 3Dhe ' N.eW ZeaTandj Cup did not Receive

much attention from these quarters, Glen Canny being the only horse nominated. The Auckland Trotting Cup will be worth 200050v3 this year,

The annual report of the Forbury Park Trotting Club states that the gate money increased by no less than £127 7s, showing the' great interest taken in the sport of trotting. The stakea for the season amounted to £12,235, being £2365 in excess of last year, while for the first time in the history of the club two races of £IOOO each were placed on the programme. As showing the suitability of Forbury Park for any large outside functions, the military review in honour of tho Prince of Wales, which was held there, fully demonstrated this, the only drawback being the" want of a proper tram' service. This tho committee is pleased to report will shortly bet overcome, as negotiations between tho club and. the City Council have been entered into whereby a line will be laid via Eichardson and Plunket streets to Yictoria road. This should tend to further popularise the Park. In accordance with the rules, the following have been proposed for election: —President, Mr G. Hodges; vice-presi-i dent, Mr T. RACING CLUBS AND INCOME TAX. TAX NOT TO BE RETROSPECTIVE. WELLINGTON, August 23. ' A private deputation interviewed the Prime Minister recently on racing matters, Sir' George Clifford being spokesman. As a result it is stated that Mr Massey assured the deputation that the income taxation on • clubs would not be retrospective. Reference: was made to the. collection of both the 2j per cent, on totalisator receipts and incoma tax, but Mr Massey could not promise a/ revision, as all finance possible was re? quired. When the new Land and Income Tax measure was brought down there-would be a readjustment, and the point might then be considered. The Prime Minister was also asked to give assistance in the suppression of the undesirable element, the clubs' detectives not being able to cope with it; and he promised to consult tho Minister of Justice on the subject.
