CASUALTIES.
A motor car crashed into a gig at Riversdale on the 22nd, smashing the vehicle and throwing out tho occupants—Miss Lynch and two children. Miss Lynch sustained a fractured skull and was rendered unconscious. Sihe"--is how in a serious condition in a private hospital at Gore. Mr Firank Kidman, a victim of the recent motor collision at Si.mdon (the third death! died in the Palmerston North Hospital oh the 24th ult. Deceased was 32 years of age, and was proprietor of the Trocadero in Wellington. He leaves a widow and one child. An octogenarian, named Wilcox, engaged in metal carting at Weber, was found dead in his dray on the 24th, having expired while taking his team to get a load. Alexander Crawford, aged 69, who came to Dannevirke, died suddenly at Mangatera shortly after leaving the hospital, where he had gone for treatment of heart trouble. Bernard Olney, aged 16 years, dropped dead at the Auckland Drill Hall while attending a parade of Senior Cadets.
A sensational motor car accident and a miraculous escape by the driver occurred about 12 .miles up the Wanganui River on the 25th. Mr W. 'Pennant, a Wanganui driver, was motoring along the bank in the vicinity of the starting point of the rowing championship course. He had just dropped some passengers, and when turning round the wheels became locked. The enginebegan to race,, and the car leaped completely ovu- the bank, and dropped 150 ft, turning a couple of somersaults in the air, and depositing Mr Tennant on a ledge only 2ft wide. The car again leapt, and dropped into the bed of the river, the total drop being estimated at 300 ft. Mr Tennant escaped with a few bruises. Matthew Wech, aged 57 years, a farmer at Puhoi, Auckland, fell from a bridge and was drowned.
While proceeding to Manaia on the 26th. Edward Borrie, 19, Svhile riding a motor bicycle, collided with a horse and trap qoming towards Hawera, driven by James Mead, a farmer. Borrie was killed. The superintendent of police has received word that Thomas Morley, a railway employee at Paekakariki, committed suicide by shooting himself with a pea-rifle. At the inquest a verdict was returned that deceased committed suicide by shooting himself, no cause being assigned. Sydney Small, a returned soldier, who was in Christchurch on his honeymoon, from Invercargill, was killed on the 28th ult. by the overturning of a motor car on a road at Bromley. There were several men in the car, and at a sharp turn of the road the steering gear -locked, and the driver, M'Causland, could not turn the car, which overturned. All the occupants were pinned beneath the car., and Small was killed instantaneously. M'Causland was severely cut about the legs, and the others escaped with a few scratches.
W. Emmett, who had been at Sunnyside Mental Hospital for about 11 years, fell from a dray in the institute grounds on the 28th, and was killed. The body of Max Wapper, a Russian, was found in a section adjoining Young's private hotel, Wellington, on tho 29th. There were wounds on his head and face. There were no signs of a struggle. It is possible that the man hal fallen from the upper storey.
A boy named Raymond Aitken, aged 12 years, residing with his parents at Sandymount, was admitted to the Hospital on Sunday afternoon suffering from a fracture of tho right arm,, caused by falling from a hay-loft.
John Martin,.- a _ farmer, aged 35 years, residing at Tokoiti, Milton, was admitted to Hospital on Saturday night, suffering from a fractured right leg, sustained through slipping as he was stepping off a cart.
