DAIRY PRODUCE Messrs Nathan and Co. (Wellington) report as follows tinder date May 24: Butter.—lt is apparent, from cables received) and inquiries reaching New Zealand, that Australia is very short of butter. We ourselves have had messages calling for supplies from 10,000 to 15,000 boxes this week, but, of course, under tha present circumstances no export is permitted. The only way_ that anything can be done to assist Australia that we .can see—if the position is serious as far as actual local consumption is concerned, and provided this butter is not •wanted for re-export to the East, etc. —is for the Australian Government to arrango with the British Government to release them a certain quantity for distribution in Australia. Locally wo understand that the Government Is arranging to supply distributors with but'er if they are not r.ble to arrango for sufficient butter in the usual way, that is, direct from the manufacturers. Tho position of butter in London scorns to have been altered by the Government agreeing to ceape rationing. This, no doubt, has been caused by the plentiful supply available through the natural course of events—i.e., when a lino is showing a high value it is certain that there is a rush to produce same, It was thought at ©no time that there was a likelihood of tho fixed! retail price of 3s per lb being reduced to 2s 6d, but apparently no such move has been made, or at least has not boon made for the present. One other point that arisen at thi9 stage, and which we have touched Upon before, is, if the value of butter for

export is to equal about 2s 3d, based upon the English fixed retail price of 3s, then what is to be the price to the consumer for local trade in New Zealand? The New Zealand Government, no doubt, is considering this matter and will have something to announce in a little while. Cheese.—There seems to be an inclination on the part of cheese producers to feel that the value of butter is likely to bo a better payable proposition than cheese. This is doubtful at present values. Taking into consideration that the Government may have to make some provision to fix the local price of butter, it appears to us that cheese is still quite equal to, if not better than, butter. It must be remembered that at least onethird of the butter produced in New Zealand is used locally. However, all these discussions are a little hypothetical, because _no one can* say to-day whether the retail prices in England, both of butter and cheese, may not be amended or altered from time to time. The factories with dual plants are,_ of course, in a safe position. The general view 'is that the English fixed prices of butter and cheese are not likely to be raised, but rather, if any alteration is made, they will be lowered. Casein.—The market for casein appears to b 3 about steady at recent quoted prices. Market cables received state that lactic acid ground! is at present worth about 70s. With other sources of supply of the same description of casein, values are as follow:—Argentine, 755; Indian, 48s to 50a. RICE MARKET. The following report has just been received by the Dunedin agents of a leading Sydney firm: Aa far as New Zealand is concerned there are only two markets that could be operated on with regard to new season's rice—namely, Burmah and Cochin China. (Saigon). Burmah is now closed out, for the reason that the estimated crop is 25 nor cent, short of normal, and the demands from the various parts of the world are enormous, resulting in the Viceroy of India requesting those parts of the British dominions that have obtained licenses to relinquish as much of the licensed quantity as possible, in order that provision may bo made for other parts of the Empire that are in great need of and almost wholly dependent upon rice supplies. Owing to the failure of the Siamese rice crop the situation has become alarming in the Malay Peninsula, where rice is the staple diet of the non-E-uropean population, and there is considerable danger of famine in those parts, for the reason India cannot even allot one-half ef the minimum requirements of the Malay Peninsula. The export duty on rice from Cochin China has again been increased, and America, the Straits Settlements, Java, Europe, and Cuban ports have been buying heavily. The outcome is that prices have advanced, and there is every indication of th© market remaining very firm. PERPETUAL TRUSTEES, ESTATE, AND AGENCY COMPANY. The thirty-sixth annual report of the directors of the Perpetual Trustees, Estate, and Agency Company of N.Z., to be submitted at the annual general meeting of shareholders to be held at the office of the company, Vogel street, Dunedin, on Wednesday, June 9, 1920, states: _ "The directors have pleasure in submitting their thirty-sixth annual report and balance sheet. The profit for the year amounts to £6629 lis sd. which, added to £1994- 3s (being amount brought forward from previous year [£2593 12s Bd], less income tax for year ended 30th April, 1919, £599 9s 8d), shows an available Balance of £8623 14s sd. Out of this an interim dividend at the rate of 15 per cent, per annum on the paid-up capital of £12,500 was paid for the half-year ended 31st October, 1919, which absorbed £937 10s, and the directors now recommend that tho balance, £7680 4s sd, be dealt with as follows:—To payment of a dividend on paid-up capital (£12,500) at 15 per cent, per annum for half-year ended 30th April, 1920, £937 10s; to reserve fund, £2500; to bonus to staff, £450 7s; to depreciation, £35; to carry forward to next year (subject to income tax for year just ended), £3763 7s sd. Messrs James Begg and Robert J. Gilmour are thfe retiring directors, and both being eligible offer themselves for re-election. ' PUR MARKET. Mr R. S. Black, who is the. (where a fur sale is at present taking place), has received the following cablegram: —"Fitch: Kolinsky, about 20 per cent, lower than in February."
