Y.M.C.A. WAR WORK

- . OTAGO CAMPAIGN. APPEAL FOR FUNDS. The campaign to enable tho Y.M.C.A. to continue its splendid war work is being prosecuted with vigour, and the response SO far is very gratifying. A picture on our illustrated pages conveys an excellent idea of how the representatives of tine institution follow the men with comforts right into the firing line, and servo out. muchneeded refreshments in" sand-bag shelters or dug-outs subject to shell fire. With such proof before them, who that has the money oan resist the appeal now made? The following are the subscriptions received Jn Dunedin so far: —

* CAMPAIGN IN THE'COUNTRY. During the past week Mr A. S.(Wilson (genani 1 lecretary of the Y.M.C.A. at PortJi), accompanied by Mr 11. V. Pulton (secretary ul tno Otago A. and P. Society) has been touring the Bruce and Tuapeka Counties lr. the interests of the Red Triangle appeal. Remarkable interest was shown in the campaign by the residents of the Bruce electorate, and already several amounts of £250 each have been promised, tfas objiot boiug to secure eight donations of Shis amount. It is confidently anticipated tho local committee that £SOOO vvill be lenlisod for tho Bruce County.

The deputation reached Lawrence on Thursday, and during the afternoon one o'orwvtion of £250 was secured. In the *v«nitiff Mosarn Wilson and Fulton met the (•sua! Jiiiriotio Committee, and the foliovvtag morning t'.ier interviewed the County Ckrauoil. r J.i:e following were appointed a committee in Lawrence, and they will meet every day during tho campaign i —Messrs

W. R. Smyth, J. B. M'Kinlay, H. H. I Leary, H. Brown, J. Norrie, J. Edie, F. Vivian, D. MTntosh, A. Arthur H. L. Darton. S. Arthur, R. O'Shea, R. S. Botting, D. L. Christie, B. Winn, and J. C. Browne. On completion of his tour of the Otago district, Mr Wilson will leave, immediately for Western Australia. CROMWELL, March 11. The interest in Red Triangle Day in the country distriots is being greatly stimulated by the visit of Mr A. S. Wilson, of the Perth Association, who has given 16 addresses during the past eightdays. At Roxburgh an energetic canvaes is being made, Mr T. A. Pannett lending tho list with £250. All the available motors are secured for collecting. On Saturday night Mr Wilson spoke at the pictures at Alexandra. On Sunday he i spoke in the Presbyterian Churches at i Cromwell and Bannockburn, and _ at night ! to a combined audience of ■ Anglicans and j Methodists. On Monday, with the Rev. I Mr Rankin, he visited Wanaka. Mr Wili son states that mayors, clergymen, and other prominent citizens everywhere evinced i the greatest sympathy and interest. ! THE RABBI'S "GOD-SPEED." I At the Synagogue on Saturday morning the Rabbi (tho Rev. M. Diamond), in addressing his congregation, alluded to the Red Triangle campaign in tho following sympathetic terms: — | "On Monday last the Y.M.C.A. com- ' menced their great effort to raise a' substantial sum in order to enable them to continue the sacred work they have been doing for three years and a-half and more. j it would be superfluous to enumerate all they are doing, but I cannot but express my sincere admiration for that and i glorious institution. Their work is religion in reality-—truth made visible, It is not based on recompense of any kind, but is pedestalled on pure loving kindness, on selfless generosity of heart, mind, and soul. We behold in the ,work of the Y.M.C.A. not pious devotion of individuals in moments of ecstacy, but concentration of will and strength of scores of thousands of men to as3Uage pain, quench thirst, gratify hunger, and by word and deed to uplift and strengthen'the fallen by the way. Irrespective of oreed and Colour, innocent of hoary prejudice, mindful only of humanity as suffering children in a ■ world torn by convulsion, the Y.M.C.A. do their heavenly work silentlv, humbly, gratefully, and unsparingly No voluntary institution in conj nection with the war is more deserving of the community than the Y.M.C.A. They are entitled to oux moral and physical sup- . port, and their present appeal to augment 1 their funds should meet with our generous and liberal response. —11318. CAMPAIGN IN WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, March. 6. ! The Y.M.C.A. campaign began well with* a large public meeting in the Town Hall ,to-night. The Mayor (Mr Luke) presided, and the speakers included Mr Massey, Sir Joseph Ward, Sir James Allen, Mr Hindmarsh (Labour member for Wellington South), and Mr Harold Beauchamp (chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand). The speakers heartily praised the Y.M.C.A.'s successful work throughout all the war zones, and these tributes were warmly applauded by a very enthusiastic audience. Sir Joseph Ward summarised the big organisation's activities by saying that it took the place of "the soldiers' mothers, brothers, and sisters at the front. Sir James Allen emphasised the importance of the Y.M.C.A. brotherly aid in maintaining the efficiency of soldiers. He said its hearty human touch near the front lino linked the soldiers with their own homes and kinsmen in New Zealand, and the moral effect was something which the ordinary military machinery could not give. Thus the Y.M.C.A. and similar organisations hid an extremely important function in the war-winning work. ' Mr Hindmarsh remarked that the people of New Zealand were still able to live in luxury. More money was spent on pleasure now than before the war. This was not creditable, and he urged self-denial here to ensure a maximum of comfort for New Zealand's defenders overseas. Mr Beauchamp said that Auckland's recent £50,000 to the Y.M.C.A. appeal represented 5s per head of the provincial population. The Wellington district'' list to-night totalled £9OOO, and there are signs that ihe aggregate will well exceed £25,000. A very strong Citizens' Committee, thoroughly representative of all classes, is tapping every available source. This is probably the most influential combination ever associated here for raising money. There is solid evidence in all part of the ; city that the Y.M.C.A. movement is very ■ popular. The Red Triangle is conspicuous I at all prominent points. A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN. The keen interest aroused among the people of Wellington and Christchurch districts may bo appreciated by a perusal of the following list of the large subscriptions received in these centres up to Saturday last. The Waihemo, County Council, the Mosgiel Borough Council, and the Palmerslon Borough Council are arranging for house to

house canvassing in their respective districts. A splendid body of ladies has been secured for the suburban housc-to-houso canvass, and excellent results are anticipated from tho loyal dwellers in our suburbs. The esteemed mother of a well-known Dunedin boy who laid down his brave young life in Flanders, fighting for King and country, has presented a 20-franc note to the fund. This note was found on the body of the noble young son of Dunedin. It will bo offered for sale to the highest bidder, the object being to add a substantial amount to the funds. Offers should be sent in by midday Friday.
