HAMMER SPRINGS.

March 8. —A most enjoyable social was held in the Queen Mary Hospital on Thursday evening. These entertainments are very popular, tho Cavel Ward always being crowded. Songs were sung by Miss Goggin, Corporal Dobson, Mr Woods, and ex-Sergeant-major Ridgeway. A pianoforte selection was rendered by Mrs Buchanan and a. violin solo by Private Marshall. The music for the dances was played by Miss Summers and Miss M'Naughton. An excellent supper was. provided by the ladies. During an interval the following prizes were presented:—Pingpong tournament, Lance-corporal Newman; photographic competition—'Sergeant Roper 1, Captain Clifton 2; marking pig's eye, Lancecorporal Fnirbap'n. and Mrs Whitmore were presented with a purse of sovereigns each on the occasion of their leaving Haumer Springs. Mr Whitmore has been postmaster at Hanmer Springs for over 10 years, and has been transferred to Mongonui in the North Island. Mr Whitmore has taken a leading part in everything that has taken place at Hanmer Springs, and will be missed by both the "residents and public. Mr Murray, in making th<- presentation to Mr Whitmore on behalf of the residents, spoke very highly of all that Mr Whitmore had done, and wished him every success in his new sphere. Mr Whitmore suitably responded. The presentation to Mrs Whitmore was made by the soldiers and Red Cross workers Mrs Whitmore has been a most energetic worker for the Red Cross, and her services will be greatly missed. Dr Hendry, in making the presentation, spoke at some length on what Mis Whitmore had done, and said that she carried away with her the good wishes of them all for her future happiness.
