AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By Taihoa. This,week-end the Te Aroha Jockey Club holds} tho annual meeting of the club, and on Saturday of next week the Ohinemuri Jockey Clui> will deal the final blow to the country circuit. Attention will then have to be directed to the larger and more important gatherings, the first of which will be the biff Easter meeting at EHerslio, followed a couple of days later by the Avondale autumn meeting. The policy of holding both meetings cloee together is ono which should be a boon to the Avondale Club, as many visiting owners bringing horses to Auckland will now avail themselves of the opportunity of picking up a stake at Avondale, whereas before they would not be represented on the suburban course. The Avondale Club is a progressive body, and though considerable expense has been borne to erect an up-to-date course and appointments, every_ opportunity is taken to cater for owners in providing a tractive prizes. The YVaikato trainer R. Hannon has no

fewer than three—viz., Tinopai, Glenopal, and Rebel—engaged in the Te Aroha Cup, and as each of the three appears to hold a good chance, whichever one ho pins his hopes on should be handy at the finish. Uncle Ned is .reported to bo doing well at Avondale, and, if this is so, the wiry little bay should go close to landing cither the To Aroha or Ohinemuri Cups. The Waikato Trotting Club held its annual meeting at Claudelands last Saturday, and scored a big success. Some very fair horses were competing, and keen racing resulted. In several instances there were fair prices returned, and backers had rather a rocky time during the day. The weights for the A.R.C. Easter Handicap made their appearance on Monday, and, of course, have naturally been well perused by sportsmen. If asked now to select a horse likely to be hard to dispose of I should name Egypt 8.9. Another well is Parisian Diamond 7.7. But, of course, it is altogether too early yet to look for the winner. The Hierarch gelding Hiero has not been doing well during the last week, and as a oonsequence he is not going to the Te Aroha meeting, where he claimed an engagement. Hopfield is being kept up to his work, but w T hereas he was once one of the most eagerly watched horses very few now take any notice of him, and the general opinion is that he is not much good. The hurdlers Fisher and Haskayne are doing regular work, .Fisher being the more forward of the pair. W. Sharpe took Fiomiuala and Glenclalough to Hamilton last month, but owing to wet weathe-t the first-named did not start in the Cup, but went on to Wahganui. She then returned to Hamilton, and has been in training there, but will now do the Te Aroha and Ohinemuri meetings. Sharpe will then return to Ellerslie. Loyal Arch, who won at the Hamilton meeting, 'has not raced since, but D. Moraghan is keeping her at concert pitch, and is evidently intending her to be ready for" the 'Easter meeting at Ellerslie. Auckland is not by any means strong in jumpers just now, and one of the fittest of the hurdlers in work is Gluetanus, who, it will be remembered, won on the second day of the Christmas meeting. Gluetanus can both jump and gallop fast, but his performances do not make him out to be very reliable. Penniless at one time, when he made a field of maiden hurdlers look like mules, was expected to turn out a champion over the small fences, but, instead of improving, he failed to run such a good rice again. However, he is looking well, and his jumping of late has been of 'the bold character, and it is quite on the cards that he may bring off a surprise shortly. Polydamon is already being selected as likely to be prominent in the A.R.C. Easter Handicap. There is no doubt the chestnut js a good horse, but, despite the fact that he won the Christmas Handicap, <Jne mile, I am inclined to think that, being such a slow beginner, the pace set in the Easter next month will not give him much chance to get on his legs. Then, again, he is doing only the very lightest of exercise, and a better lino as to his prospects can be gathered when he is loosened out _ on the track. Another inmate of N. Cunningham's stable in Fabriquette is not doing a great deal of work. The two-year-old Informal is striding along attractively just at present, and when the Great Northern Champagne Stakes is under discussion next month he will prove without doubt that his failure at Christmas was only because he was a. long way from being well. Rathlin, who gallops well on the track, is evidently a " quitter," because with the colours up he is of no use at all.' Rock Diamond continues to improve, and the big chestnut will soon be a hard pro. position in a h'ack race. He should make a useful jumper later on. Lady Penury, a very useful mare wher well, is beginning to bear a racy appear, ance, and the next few weeks should see a finish put to her condition. The crack 'chaser Waimai is reported to be in steady work at Hamilton. For a couple of furlongs Shining Light can go fast, but as yet he does not stay very well. Perhaps he will do better with age, as he is a of a colt. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. GORE RACES. (Fhom Our Special Repobteb.)
