LAND AND WATER.

kaitangata rifle club. The final shoot for the Carson Cup took the form of a field day on Saturday 2nd inst., when 16 riflemen participated under conditions which militated against good •coring. A very tricky wind made itself Unpleasantly felt, puzzling even the oldest find most experienced men with the rifle. While it was generally recognised that W. I}. Carson's position would prove strong enough to ensure victory for him, yet the fact that D. Anderson, G. Middlemass, J. Knowles, and T. Frazer were so close up . that. only one or two points separated their Aggregates from that of the first-named, added materially to the. interest taken in the final effort. At the three ranges, 800, 500, and 600 yards, Carson secured 30,. 32, and 29 respectively, which left a good opening for other probable winners, but the same unkind fates which attended Carson's efforts were also closely attendant upon each of the other aspirants for cup honours., J. Kyle's shooting in the earlier stages of the Cup competitions bade fair to place him as a probable winner, but as the shooting drew nearer to the final stages, hia scoring became very erratic, until on the final day's shoot he secured only tenth place, reducing hi? aggregate points to 454. At the conclusion of the day's operations the various aggregates were compiled, and Rifleman W. D. Carson was declared the winner—for the second time—of the cup and the Lee gold medal, which accomDanies it. There was ample evidence of the true spirit of sport in the manner in which the winner was congratulated upon his success. The result of faturday's shooting, together with the crgregate points secured by the leading shots is shown in the following table :
