At, Kurow on Wednesday last Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., fined Roland Hill. William Gard, and Archibald M'Lucas 20s each for being in the Railway Hotel after closing hours. The magistrate said it appeared the ■ men had business to transact, as pleaded by them, but the fact that they entered the promisee together put another face on the matter. J. J. Spiers and J. Grier, hotoikeepers. were convicted on a charge of to maintain lights outside the doors of their premises, but no penalty was imposed. The evidence taken by the Marine Department into the cause of the explosion of benzine fumes aboard the Huia recently showed that there had been smoking on the vessel, the explosion resulting from fumes contacting with a lighted pipe cigarette, or match. The Harbour Board by-laws prohibit smoking on vessel* laden with dangerous goods.
