ANNUAL MEETING. WELLINGTON, February 26. The annual meeting of 'the Newspaper Proprietors' Association was opened in Wellington on Monday evening, and was continued to-day; present —Messrs J. P. Tho President, in his opening address, referred to tho war, and expressed the wish that peaco would speedily be brought about with honour to our colours. He reviewed the work of the association for the past year. He referred to the deaths of Mr Gothard (who represented the ' Westport Times), Mr Gardiner (of the Rotorua Chronicle). Mr Lane (editor of the New Zealand Herald), Flight Lieutenant Leslie Brett (son of Mr. Arthur Brett, of the Auckland Star), and Mr List (brother of Mr T. C. List, of the Taranaki News). A resolution of sympathy with the bereaved wa3 carried by all standing. Trio President then referred .at length to the matter of paper supplies and the difficulties confronting members .in this connection. He also instanced the strain which newspaper offices were feeling, duo to depleted staffs, and said the calling up of the Second Division was accentuating the position.
It was subsequently decided to wait on the Prime Minister with a view to securing more paper by the mail boats. At the evening session Mr W. St. George (chairman of the Red Triangle appeal), with Mr. A. Varney (national secretary), waited on members to lay before them the urgent needs of the Y.M.C.A., and .to solicit the support of the newspapers in the effort to make the appeal successful. The election of . officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr P. Selig; vice-presi-dent, Mr F. B. Hyman; executive —Messrs H. Horton, L. Blundell, F. Pirani, G. Fenwick, E. A. Jones* (with power to add to their number, Messrs C. Earle, H. Brett, find- W. Coombe being recommended); Advertising Committee —Messrs E. A. Jones, k. Ooombe, W. C. Weston, R. Bell, P. Belig, and W. Blundell: Postal and Parliamentary Committee —Messrs L. Blundell, C. Earle, G. H. Dixon, and F. Pirani; Labour and Awards Committee —Messrs F. Pirani, P. Bond, R. Bell, W. C. Weston, and A. Sando; News Print Paper Committee—Messrs G. , Fenwick, L. Blundell, 11. Horton, .P. Selig; T. C. List, A. M'Nicol, and H. V. Duigan; secretary and treasurer, Mr L. Berry; auditor, Mr R. B. Bell. ' Votes of tnanka were passed to the Minister of Defence for an invitation to visit Trentham and Featherston, also to the president, secretary, and Mr. F. Pirani (the association's representative in Labour and arbitration matters), and those institutions ivhich extended hospitality to the visiting delegates. February 27. "At a meeting of the provincial section of tho Newspaper Proprietors' Association, the following executive was elected for the ensuing year:—Mr F. Pirani (chairman), Mr A. M'Nichol (hon. secretary), Mr W. C. Weston (hon. treasurer), Messrs C. H. Walker and H. V. Duigan representing the North Islandl proprietors, and Messrs P. Bond, C. East, and R. J. Gilmour representing the South Island.
