Winkie was one of the heaviest-engaged three-year-olds in England in 1915, and r 6 is certain - that, but for the war, he never would have come to New Zealand. He was ot by William the Third, one of the very „est racehorses and sires left by the Great St. Simon, who got winners of over £554,000 during 1889 and 1912, proving himself the greatest sire known. In their, first eight seasons 'on the turf William the Third's stock won over £102,329, and he is the sire of Willony (standing at 300 gs), Nassau, Roseland, King William, Trois Temps, Nassovian, and other good performers. Winkie was got by William the Third (son of St. Simon) from Conjure, by Juggler from Connie, by Pero Goniez (winner Middle Park Plate and St. Legerl Hilarity, by King Tom, the sire of St. Simon's dam and half-brother to Stockwell. He belongs to the No. 1 family, which produced such great horses as Lord Lyon, Minting, Neil Gow, Prince Palantine, Robert the Devil, Spearmint, Swynford, Chelandry, Ladas, and in all the largest number of classic winners in the Stud Book. Winkie comes in direct female line from the groat Penelope, the dam of Whalebone and Whisker, and it is quite safe to say no other mare in the English Stud Book has give"n more numerous or more cor.i inuously successful descendants on either the turf or at the stud. Winkle's sister Winkipop won over £12,000 in stakes. and his brother Pilliewinkie, out of _ six starts, won the Triennial Produce Stakes at Newmarket and the Ascot Derby, beating good horses on both occasions. Winkie's dam Conjure, is a half-sister to Merry Wife, the dam of Santoi, who won £II,OOO in stakes, and at present one of the best sires in England, and who had a full list at 200 gs in 1915. Sire Marcovil, dam Nadejda (full sister to Persimmon, Diamond Jubilee, and Fldrizel 11, one of the greatest families in the English Stud Book). Persimmon won the Derby, the St. Leger, the Eclipse Stakes, the Ascot Gold Cup, etc., and is the sire of winners of over £232,000, including Prince Palatine (sold for 40,000 gs), Sceptre, Your Majesty, Perola, and Keystone 11, all classical winners. Diamond Jubilee won the Derby, the St. Leger, the Two Thousand Guineas, the Eclipse Stakes, the Newmarket Stakes, etc., and was sold to go to the Argentine for 30,000g5, where he is at the top of the list of winning sires last year.
