A Chinese storekeeper in Masterton named Bang Chong was fined £2O and costs ons day last week for keeping- liquor for sale in a no-license district. A sign of the times is apparent in the fact that there are now three women gardeners constantly employed at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. They wear neat, workmanlike overalls, and present a very trim appearance. Since the establishment of the Labour Department in 1891, 118,468 workers have received practical assistance through the Men's Employment Bureau. Last year the number was "2966, a decrease on the previous year of 3012.
