THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
INVERCARGILL, September 17. The Invercargill representatives have returned from the, conference in Wellington, which was attended by 60 to 70 millers and merchants connected with the hemp industry. The meeting was addressed by the Premier and the, Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald, the latter explaining that the Imperial Government had fixed the prices at which New Zealand hemp could be sold in London after September 15 as follows: Good fair, £B3; high fair, £81; fair, £BO. Some details were wanting, such as whether the prices included war risk, or whether they were c.i.f. or landed in London. It was decided to ask the Government to cable for more definite information. As the maximum price for fair current Manila has been fixed at £BS, millers and merchants felt that they could not object to the New Zealand prices fixed. It was decided to recommend that existing contracts he not affected, and to ask the Government for a guarantee of shipping 6pace for 7500 bales monthly. The maximum prices fixed by the Imperial Government represent a drop of £lO to £l2 on the prices previously ruling in London, which market will now return to millers only from £53 to £SB f.0.b., according to whether war risk is included or not.
