THE WEATHER
HEAVY RAIN IN HAWKE'S BAY. RIVERS IN FLOOD. NAPIER, January 3. Following exceptionally heavy and almost continuous rain, which has fallen since Monday nisrht, the rivers are in flood, and unless the bad weather soon abates serious damage is threatened. Fortunately the mouths of the rivers were free from bars, but on account of the unprecedented amount of water running the rivers are unable to copo with the heavy volume. With tho crops still ungarnercd, the devastating result of an inundation can bo easily imagined. Hastings reports that the rivers are rising rapidly. If the rain continues much longer all the low-lying country will certainly be flooded. In some parts of the country a good deal of hay is still Ol)t ; and there seems little prospect of saving it. Tho following is the rainfall recorded by Mr Jacobsen at the pumping station, Musselburgh, for 1916:—January. ,960 in; F<l>ruray, 1.480 in; March. 2.580 in ; April, 1.120 in; May. 1.5 p 0 ; n; June, 4.790 in : July, 1.370 in ; August. 3.350 in : l.OOOin ; October, 1.140 in; November. 2.7C0 ; n; December, .910in;—total. 22.980 in.
