PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
The monthly committee meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, held on tho 12th, was presided over by the Rev. W. Saunders. Inspector Craig reported on a charge of ill-treating a horse by excessive punishment at Queenstown. He said ho could get very little evidence beyond the confession of the person accused. One witness who could give evidence as to the (logging was at present in Wellington. The inspector thought that the horse had been punished at too great a lapse of time after its alleged offence.—lt was suggested that the matter had been inquired into by the Invercargill inspector, who had been appointed since the complaint was made. —It was rc\solved to refer the complaint to a committeo consisting of Messrs Fenwick, Snowball, and Sligo. The secretary .stated that he had written to the Invercargill Society and to the police at Invercargill, calling attention to the statement that cattle were starving on Enderby Island because of overstocking. The former stated that the captain of tho Amokura had been written to on the subject, but no reply had been received. Inspector Norwood had replied that ho was making inquiries as to tho owners of the island.— The matter was referred to the police. A bonus of £26 was voted to Inspector Craig, and one of £5 to tho secretary (Mr T. S. Graham).
