Tho Patea County Council has decided to tar-seal some five or six miles of the Main road within its boundaries. The Stratford Post states that portions will bo selected which :.have a sufficient depth of metal, and are at tho moment in proper condition to take tar-sealing, and doubtless tho policy will be pursued in the future of tar-sealing each section of the Main road, as it is renewed and remetalled from time to time.

During the recent whaling season Mr J. Ferano's whaling party captured 34 whales, one of which was a valuable right whale. Prior to the war a whale of this species was valued at £SOO. The Baldick partywas not so successful, capturing only seven whales, all of which were hump-back. The Perano party had in use a new boat of 120 horse-power, as well as two other smaller vessels, while Baldick's carried out operations in two now boats, of 65 horsepower and 85 horse-power respectively. As showing the increases from 1913 to 1916 in the cost of certain articles employed in the manufacture of aerated waters, tho following figures were quoted at the Arbitration Court at Auckland:—Sugar, 30 per cent.; sulphuric acid. 45; bi-carbonate of soda. 60; citric acid, 133; tartaric acid, 150; corks, 33g; "Crown" corks, 20; patent bottles, 75; bottling wire, 150; benzine, 22£; ginger, 100; nails, 130; cases, 10.
