A conference is to be held in the Pahiatux, district on Wednesday to select a Reform candidate for the Pahiatua seat to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr Escotb, It is stated that it is likely that the choice will fall on Mr G. Harold Smith, a lawyer of tlio district. Although there was an understanding when the National Cabinet was formed that, so far as the Ministry was concerned, the party status quo would not be disturbed in theevent of vacancies, thero is nothing, to prevent a candidate from entering the lists as an Independent Liberal. The Liberal candidate at the last general election was Mr J D. Matthews, and it is reported that ho may again contest the seat.
