TUTURAU.

June 5. —The lovely summer-like weather wc have been enjoying terminated after a two clays’ gale on the 23rd ult., heavy rain falling, followed by snow showers. Very cold weather has prevailed since, with Wo nights of frost; but as wo arc now nearly at midwinter w r o cannot complain. Grass and turnips kept on growing till the cold came, and our district is looking very much bettor than several I have passed through lately. The choose factory benefited by the

long spell of fine weather, and the milk supply kept up well till the cold snap came. The supply has now fallen off, and the factory will be closing in about a week’s time. There is general satisfaction among suppliers that their manager (Mr F. Taylor) secured two prizes (a first and a second) out of four entries at the Dunedin Show. As _ there is no pasteuriser in our factory, which is one of the great helps to good cheese, it speaks well for the high quality of the cheese turned out hero. The potato crops lifted at the beginning of May were in general of good quality; but only a few had large yields, and there will not bo a great many for sale. Potatoes do well here generally, as the land is sandy and the district a warm one, frost not being so general here as in many places. Put the long dry spell affected the potatoes this season. Answering the Call. —Our young men arc slipping away quietly in ones and twos to servo their country, the farewells all taking place in Mataura, the general centre. Mission. —A week’s mission is being conducted here by the Rev. Mr Evans, of Vv aikaka. . . On Leave. —Sergeant-major Christie had brief leave from Trentham to attend his sister’s wedding, and arrived during the breakfast, the boat having failed to meet the express.
