POMAHAKA DOWNS.
May 15. —Wo are now in tho middle of the first month of winter, but tho weather is what one would expect in summer. There have been a few frosty nights, but the days are beautiful. The Farm. —All seasonable work is being pushed ahead. Mr Ballock's mill has been doing some thrashing, but it has now gone to Wairuna.. Death.—l am sorry to say that Mr Wm. Mitchell, lately a farmer adjoining this estate, died in a private hospital in Dun-e-din last week, and was buried in tho Clinton Cemetery on Friday. For a long time Mr Mitchell has been in poor health. A few years ago he sold bis farm to Mr Black, and went to reside in Clinton with his wife. Those of us who camo here at the opening of tho Pomahaka Estate will remember Mr Mitchell well—then a fine strong and very energetic man, and one who know not what it was to have too much to do. Church Matters Yesterday harvest thanksgiving services were held at Wairuna Church. There was a large congregation. The Rev. Mr Mason preached an excellent sermon, and very appropriate hymns were sung. In the passage in front of tho ohoir was a large assortment of farm produce—gifts from the farmers —which will bo sent to the Duncdin orphanages. A short time ago I reported on a social held in the Wairuna Church, but the Pomahaka Downs Church members are also coming to the front in that line, and they are going to hold their social in tho schoolroom on the evening of next Friday, 19th inst. This will be the first church social held on the estate, and as the moon will be full there will no doubt be a large attendance.
