SOUTHLAND MARKETS. (Fhom Oue Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGIL, May 13. The oat market is quiet with not a great deal doing. On the other hand, there is not much offering from the country. Prices remain the same as last week—viz., 2s per bushel on trucks at country s ; dings. The chaff market is quiet, merchants showing no disposition to buy with any freedom. Prices are. nominally, £2 15a to £3 for prime new chaff. The ryegrass market is quiet, but there is not a great deal offering and the seed is fairly well held. Merchants aro open to buy good heavy seed on the basis of 4s

to 4s 3d, but very few growers are disposed to accept this figure. The potato market is also without animation, about £4 on trucks being the ruling price in the country. Merchants are having considerable trouble through blight and scab, and also, in some ca; ; es, the potatoes are on the small side. There is a good inquiry for velvet wheat, which is worth .roni 4s 5d to 4s 7d on trucks, but Tuscan is not in demand and is only bringing from 2s 9d to 4s, except for special lines. The market for flour remains unchanged, the wholesale price being the same as last week—viz., £l2 10s per ton. The hemp market is very quiet, as the mills are now closing down.

Merino and all grades of fine crossbreds have advanced, and medium and coarse crossbreds are firm at last quotations. GRAIN AND PRODUCE SALES. Messrs Donald Reid and Co. report:— Oats: Larger quantities have been offering from southern districts, and this fact, combined with shippers' difficulty in securing freights, has had a weakening effect on the market. The demand is chiefly for prime Gartons. Prune milling, 2s 3d to 2s 3id; good to best feed, 2s 2d to 2s 3d; inferior to medium, Is 10d to 2s Id per bushel, sacks extra. Wheat: Millers are buyers of choice lines—velvet preferred—but are not disposed to make heavy purchases of other qualities. Fowl wheat is offering freely, and meets with fair demand. Prime milling velvet, 5s Id to 5s 2d; Tuscan, etc., 4s 3d to 4s 6d; best whole fowl wheat, 3s lOd to 4s; medium, 3s 6d to 3s 9d ; inferior, 2s 9d to 3s 3d per bushed, sacks extra. MELBOURNE HIDE SALES. MELBOURNE, May 11. At the hide sales to-day there were moderate supplies. Heavies and mediums were id lower: lights and kips unchanged. CLEARING SALE. The Otago Farmers' Co-operative Association of New Zealand (Ltd.) reports having held a most successful clearing s-ulo of stock and implements on account of Messrs J. Wright and Sons, Brighton. The dairy cows, although not in good condition, met with exceptionally keen demand, and brought good prices. The horses were all in good fettle, and prices realised were very satisfactory, considering the present state of the market. Implements and sundries fetched full values. OTAGO FARMERS' HORSE BAZAAR, The Otago Farmers' Co-operative Association of New Zealand (Limited) reports:— Our weakly horse sale was held on Saturday last. There was a large attendance of trotting men and the general publio. The main attraction on the catalogue was several well-known trotting horses, but bidding for these was dull and dragging, and only one or two were sold. The remainder of the catalogue was made up .chiefly of light harness horses, with a isinall percentage of medium draughts. Bidding for horses suitable for plough teams was fair, and we sold practically the whole of the entry of this class of horse. Aged and done draughts and light harness horses mot with a poor sale. We quote: Good young draught marcs, £24 to £2B; superior young draught geldings, fit for shaft or lorry work, £2B to £35; ordinary draught mares and geldings, £lB to £24;' aged draughts, to £ls; good upstanding vanners, at from £lB to £25; ordinary spring-carters, at from £ls to £2O; upstanding buggy mares and geldings, £lO to £ls; hacks and ponies, £4 to £B. kct has been quiet, and sales are more difficult to effect at late rates. Good, heavy lines, suitable for milling, or seed, have been receiving most attention. Feed lines are in fair demand, and meet with a slow sale at quotations. Prime milling Gartons, up to 2s 3id; good to best feed, 2s Id to 2s 3d per bushel (sacks extra). Wheat: Choice lines of velvet are in good demand, and meet with a ready sale at late rates. With the exception of choice Tuscan, there is very little response from millers for other varieties. There is a large quantity of Tuscan of medium quality offering, vchich is being taken into store on farmers' account. Fowl wheat is very plentiful, and sales cannot be effected at late rates. Choice lines of milling velvet, 5s Id to 5s 2d; choice milling Tuscan, 4s 3d to 4s od ;medium quality milling, 4s to 4s 2d; best whole fowl wheat, 3s lOd to 4s per bushel, sacks extra. Potatoes: Fair consignments have been coming forward of late, and lines of choice table sorts are meeting with a ready sale on arrival at quotations. Medium quality and those linos affected with disease and scab are not so readily dealt with, and lower values have to be accepted. Choice tables, £5 to £5 ss; medium to good, £4 5s to £4 15s per ton, sacks in. Chaff: There has been a good inquiry for bright, heavy oaten sheaf chaff, which has been offering rather sparingly of late, and any consignments of this quality- have been meeting with a ready sale at an advance on late rates. Choice black oaten sheaf, up to £4; best oaten sheaf, £3 10s to £3 15s; medium to good, £3 to £3 7s 6d per ton, sacks extra.
