THE ABSENT FRIEND.
How swee<t the voice of memory! lis music to the hearts of men In thrilling accents hourly speaks Of friends they long to meet again. Though oceans wide between us roll, The winds that blow across the sea May sometimes waft, from heart to heart, Some tender note of memory. Although your lot may soon be cast Upon some distant old-world shore, I feel that sometimes, on the breeze, Your thoughts to these far hills may soar To us, the friends you leave behind, Fond memory, in days to come, Will often bring a thought of one We hope ere long to welcome home. If wishes may, in danger's hour, Like guardian spirits round you stand, Ours must surround you to assure Your safe return to Maoriland. C. H.
