MELBOURNE LUMPERS' STRIKE.

MELBOURNE, February 29,

An oil famine is threatened, owing to the wharf labourers' refusal to handle cargoes, and their demand for a higher rate of wages. There are 365,000 cases lying in the harbour, and stocks will be exhausted in a fortnight. The seriousness of the position is realised by the Defence and Naval Departments, who are unable to obtain supplies for lighting and lubricating, while a quantity is required for reshipment to the islands, where the production of ore for munitions has been stopped owing to the strike.
