A MYSTERIOUS CRIME
♦ MELBOURNE, March 1 A mysterious tragedy occurred nea|; Heidelberg. A chauffeur named William Haines was found dead beneath a motor car, covered with a rug, and with four bullet wounds in the head. There were blood-stains in various parts of the car, which was sent from Melbourne in response to a telephone caller giving the name of Lestrange. An hour after its departure the car was discovered standing in the road, and Haines dead. The police have ascertained that no Lestrange lives at the address given. They have no clue to the tragedy. March 3. The only clue to the Heidelberg tragedy is the discovery of a bag containing false whiskers and false motor car numbers near the scene of the murder. March 4, The police suspect that the motive for the Heidelberg tragedy was that the occupants of the car intended to hold up a bank in the vicinity, and Haines, the chauffeur, refused to participate, and was killed to prevent him giving information. A substantial reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of' the criminals.
