MEETING AT RUNANGA.
GOVERNMENT SCHEME REJECTED. GREYMOUTTL March 2. The Runanga Borough Council submitted the Recruiting Board's proposals to a public meeting at Runanga last night, when it was decided to have nothing to do with the scheme, as the Government only wanted to push the responsibility on to the public bodies. Part of the resolution, stating that returned soldiers should be employed at union rates to do recruiting work, was deleted. It was further resolved to urge the Government to recommend the Home authorities to open negotiations with the Central Powers with a view to making peace proposals.
