FOURTEENTH REINFORCEMENTS

There are 117 men still short in the in'fantry section of the Fourteenth Reinforcejnents, which will leave here on the 9th inst. OTAGO MEN ENTERTAINED. A social function to entertain the Dunedin men who leave on Thursday for Trentham was held on Saturday night in the 'Art Gallery Hall. There was a large attendance 01 recruits and their friends, and an .'enjoyable evening was spent. Musical Stems were rendered, and refreshments were provided, and the time was passed pleasantly in conversation, card playing, etc. At an interval the Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark) spoke briefly. He was proud, he said, that jwhen the call came the men of thie young land showed that the true spirit of the British race still animated them. There (was no more glowing story in history than the story of Anzac, and the part the young men of Australasia played there. They fought as British soldiers alone could fight. But their departure had not exhausted all the noble sons of New Zealand, for month .. by month men were answering the call and rallying to the flag. He wished "God-speed" ' to the brave men who were going to fight for thoir country, and he was euro that they would do their duty as bravely as the men J jof Anzao did. During their absence their memory would bo cherished in. the kind hearts of the many who would be watching over them, and who would givo them a royal /welcome when they returned. The fate of (the British Empire was in the hands of those who were fighting in the war. Mr Clark read telegrams expressing reat unavoidable absence, and hearty good wishes to the Otago men of the Fourteenth Reinforcements, from the Primo Minister and Mr G. Fenwiok.
