WAIKAIA.

March 6.—The weather is very warm. Sunny days followed by heavy rains are causing much growth. There are heavy crops of oats in the district, and the turnips are- first-class in all the paddocks. Patriotic—There was a good attendance of ladeis at the Red Cross meeting held in the schoolroom on March 1. Present—Miss Lloyd, Mesdamcs Clark, Stirling, Crowley, Goer, Lee (2), Mutch, Moffitt, sen., Moffitt, and Three sewing machines •were kept busy, and two bandage-winding machines were also in use. Many needful articles are being prepared for our bravo and wounded soldiers. Obituary.—lt is with deep regret I record the death of Mr Patrick Maher, of Cloverton, Wendonside, which occurred at Nurse Stewart's Private Hospital, East Gore, on March 3. Deceased was 58 years of age. Mr Maher had been in his usual health engaged driving a binder. He dismounted to make an adjustment to the machine, when ho suddenly collapsed. Dr Watt was called, and advised his removal to the hospital at Gore, but deceased, though conscious to the last, never rallied, and died at about 10.30. Mr Maher was born at Frcshford, Ireland, and arrived in New Zealand in 1881, in the John Elder, landing at Lyttelton. Ho had lived in Waikaia, Wellington, and the West Coast, and settled at Wendonside about 22 years ago. His farm, Cloyerton, was one of tht» Ix'St farms in the district. One year an oat paddock yielded 100 bushels per aero. He was a justice of the peace, and very highly respected. Deceased married Miss Robson, eldest daughter of the late R. Robson, of Argyle Station, and leaves a widow, three sons, and two daughters, to -whom the sympathy of a large circle of friends in this district is extended. The body was taken to the Catholic Church, Gore, and the interment took place at Gore, on Sunday.
