WAIMATE.

October 2,—On Thursday the Timaru Orchestral Society, under Mr H. Neville Smith, gave the people of Waimate a musical treat. The singing of Mrs R. W. Rule," Miss W estmacott, and Messrs Geo. Andrews and G. Kells gave considerablo enjoyment, but pride of place must be given to Mrsi Gower Turns, wiio a.pepared lor tho first) time before a Waimate audience. Before leaving the vocalists it must bo mentioned that tho vocal items, good in themselves, were much enhanced by the excellent accompanying of Mrs Mongos, and the same may be said of tho instrumental items. Mr Hay (oboe), Mr Holgate (flute), and Mr M’Gonochie (clarionet) played the orchestral selections. Mr 0. Fyfo also gave a violin selection to Mrs N. S. Blake’s accompaniment. At tho conclusion of thg programme Mr VY. M. Hamilton returned thanks to the audience, the performers, and the local committee (Mrs Pjtts, Mrs Hamilton, Mr Fyfo), and to the young ladies who had sold sweets. Tho performers were subsequently entertained by Mr J. Simon. Tho lied Cross Fund materially benefited by the performance Entertainment.—The school children were recently given a free entertainment by Mr MGrath, of the Olympia Moving Picture Show. Tho Timaru Savage Club on Monday night gave a very successful entertainment. Tho sale of a flag, sweets, photo, etc., and receipts at the door increased the local Red Cross Funds by £BOO. There was a record attendance. The Waimate takings were the biggest yet taken in the Savages’ tour of the country districts. Tho door takings were £99 10s, also a record. The flag was finally bought by Mr Douglas Sutherland and handed over to Mr Pit* caithley for the local school. The club were entertained at Willett’s before departing for Timaru. Moryern School Bazaar.—The Morven, Catholic bazaar and queen carnival in aid of the Roman Catholic School to be built at Moryen realised £ISOO (net proceeds). The voting for queens resulted as follows; Miss Connell (Glenavy), 55,461; Miss Delahunt (Morven), 30,297. Forestry.—The South Canterbury District A.O.F. held their half-yearly meeting in the Foresters’ Hall on Thursday evening. Delegates were present from the Timaru, St. Andrew’s, Waimate, and Morven Courts. Bro. E. Wilson presided. Resolutions of sympathy were passed with Bro. T. Harris, district secretary, and witli the relatives of members who had given their lives at tho Dardanelles. A satisfactory report and balance sheet wore presented. It was pointed out that reinsurance of funeral benefits for members on active service and sick pay to wounded soldiers will result in a decrease of the district funds. After the routine business was concluded a social hour was spent. General.—Preparations are well forward for a Labour Day carnival to raise money for the Belgian and Red Cross Funds.—• Mr Sargison, recently appointed head master to the Waihao Downs School, has declined the appointment.
