October 4.—The splendid spring weather experienced hero so lar lias given farmers every chance of getting their grain crops in, and sowing is practically finished. Owing to the drop in prices, the area sown in oats will rot bo as great as last year. Lambing is general, and through the line weather some record markings are expected. Patriotic. —Our local Wounded (Soldiers’ Committee, who are supporting the {Southland Country Queen, have so far collected about £rso, which must be considered good for a small district like this. The Ivioretown coal miners came down on T'riday evening last, and provided a capital programme of songs, dances, and music. Personal. —Mr O'. M'Longall, mine host of our local hotel, has disposed of it to Mr W. L. Cowie, of Wniton, who takes possession about the middle of this month. Mr MLougall, who has purchased a farm in the Lip ton district, will be greatly missed hero, as lie took a keen interest in anything that tended to the advancement of the township. —The Country Stores (Ltd.) have also dis posed of their local store to Mr O. Sloan, who until recently was country traveller for John Edmond (Ltd.). I understand that Mr Sloan takes possession on November 1. Pacing Club. —Our Racing Club has its new course in splendid trim for the coming meeting. The contractor for the buildings has his work well under way, and should have them completed in ample time.
