ACADEMY OF ART.

WELLINGTON, October 3. Tho annual exhibition of the New Zealand Academy of Arts was opened yesterday by the Hon. G W. Russell (Minister of Internal Affairs), who congratulated the society on the fine standard of the works shown. Mr Russell said, that on a former occasioK he had plans for a new museum prepared, on tho top floor of which was to be a national gallery of art for the dominion. Ho saw a vote on the Estimates this year for tho museum, and he hoped they would yet see a national gallery and school of art established that would ho worthy of the city, and Now Zealand. Ho proposed shortly to convene a mooting of tho National Board of Science to go fully into the whole matter, and he honed to see a system established eventually whereby children from the small centre's could go to tho four chief centres to get an art training.
