PETROGRAD, October 1. fieneraliy. as a result of successful engagements, the positions of the armies along our front are favourable to our offensive. The engagements were particularly successful east of the Svientsiany=Ochmiana line. Amongst the Germans depression is noticeable iu the abandonment of the slightly wounded, and also wagons, arms, and projectiles along the line of retreat. SEVERE FIGHTING IN VOLHYNIA. PETROGRAD, October 1. A communique states: Our cavalry stopped a German offensive south of Lake Drisviaty. We dislodged the enemy from
Kulekovitcry, on the Styr, and retook Cochichtche, eastward of Kolki. Stubborn fighting is proceeding in the vicinity of Siino, eastward of Lutsk, which we abandoned two days ago. We were obliged to retire in some sectors, but repeated counter-attacks south of Siino dislodged the enemy from their trenches. GERMAN OFFICIAL REPORT. BERLIN, September 30. A communique states: On the Russian front Field-marshal von Hindenburg stormed and broke through the Russian position east of Soorgon, taking 1000 prisoners. Prince Leopold repulsed many attacks with great loss. General von Linsingen took 800 prisoners on the Upper Kormin. GERMAN HORSES AND ARTILLERY SINKING. LONDON, September 30. The Times Petrograd correspondent reports that Polish refugees state that the enemy's horses, guns, and transports are sinking in the treacherous mire of the Pinsk Marshes. Guerrilla peasant bands, knowdng perfectly the labyrinthian tracks, are effecting sudden raids with which the Germans are powmrless to cope. The peasants are firing cottages and abandoning villages in the path of the German advance.
