Sir John French, in reply to the Lord Mayor’s birthday congratula* lions, said the expression of the citizens of London’s goodwill will be the greatest encouragement to 'the troops to push their immediate success to a really decisive issue conjointly with the Allies. SATISFACTION IN RUSSIA. PETROGRAD, September 28. Profound satisfaction is expressed at the commencement of the offensive in the west, but it is realised that incessant blows alone will shake the German defence to its foundations. Demonstrators cheered the British and French Embassies, and the Czar telegraphed to M. Poincare congratulating the valiant armies upon their great success. M. Poincaire replied : “The magnificent valour of the Russians is the admiration of the world.” REFLECTION ON WALL STREET. NEW YORK, September 28. Tire enthusiasm of the allied offensive is reflected in the exceptional activity on the New York Stock Exchange."
