EVADING A SUBMARINE.

A COURAGEOUS CAPTAIN. One of the most notable escapes from the attacks of a submarine occurred early in July, near the Irish coast (says the British journal Faii-play). The Anglo-Californian, of 7333 tons gross, and owned by the Nitrate Producers Steamship Company, was attacked by a submarine at 8 o’clock in the morning, but the master (Captain Archibald Parslow) refused to give in, and so manoeuvred his vessel as to orevent the submarine from torpedoing her. The submarine for four hours shelled the steamer, the master and 10 of the crew being killed, and seven injured. On the death of Captain Parslow, who was steering the vessel, his son. who was second mate, at once seized the wheel, and despite the fact that he was being continually fired at, was able to steer the ship out of danger, so that it w'as practically duo to his efforts, added to those of his father, that the vessel was saved. It is interesting to note that prior to his departure on this voyage Captain Parslow openly stated that ho would never give up his ship to a submarine, but would fight to the last, and, if necessary, go down with his boat. Ho carried out his intentions at the cost of his life, but hie son has the satisfaction of knowing that his father’s efforts wore successful. Captain Parslow was hold in the highest respect by his owners, who, by his death, lose thenmost trusted master.
