FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

CONSOLIDATION OF FUNDS. WELLINGTON, September 29. The Friendly Societies Act Amendment Bill, which the Hon. J. A. Hanan gave notice of his intention to introduce in the House of Representatives, proposes to bring the New Zealand Act more into conformity with the English friendly societies law, leaving the adoption or otherwise of those systems for the betterment of their financial positions solely to be decided by the societies themselves. The intention is not to impose restrictions or to interfere with the rights of societies to govern themselves. Another proposal is to validate rules of societies made in good faith with the object of consolidating their funds. A modification of the payments of sick benefits in respect of members of the Expeditionary Forces is provided for. Tho principal clause is that authorising the consolidation of the benefit funds of societies and their branches. The Prime Minister stated recently that a conference would be convened for the discussion of the competition of the National Provident Fund with friendly societies. The Hon. Mr Hanan (Minister in Charge of Friendly Societies), in reply to a question to-night, stated it as Ins opinion that the conference would not be convened this year.
