AN IMPUDENT THIEF
LONDON, September 21. George Young, a tailor, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for breaking into “ Plevna ” Ryan’s room in the Rembrandt hotel and demanding money from Mrs Ryan, who was alone at the time. The latter called her husband, who, after a fierce struggle, secured Young. [Dr Charles S. Ryan, of Melbourne, is known as “Plevna” Ryan by reason of his connection with the Turkish forces as a surgeon during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-8. Ho -was in Plevna during its siege by the Russians, up to its capitulation in December, 1877. He was a personal friend of the Turkish commander (Osman Pasha), and for his eminent services as a surgeon was decorated with the Order of Medjidie and the order of Osrnanieh, and acted as Consul-general for Turkey in Australia for some years. Ho offered his services to the Australian authorities, and was engaged as a surgeon at the front for some weeks, but was evidently in England at the time of this occurrence. Though an elderly man, ‘Plevna” Ryan is not one whom a burglar would wish to meet in a personal encounter.]
