BOWLING.

Secretaries are requested to forward particulars of games played and forthcoming matches.

NOTES BY “JACK.”

The bowling season in Dunedin was opened on Saturday. It is true that the §t. Clair Club opened its green on the previous Saturday, September 30, which is about the earliest date for opening _on record. On the 2nd Dunedin, Caledonian. Roslyn, Kaituna, and Mornington Greens were* formally opened. The first four named are the- oldest established about Dunedin, and the fact of their being so early affords proof of the speedy manner in which greens recover after a heavy season’s play if tho caretaker knows his business. Tho president of the Dunedin Club, on behalf of the members, presented Miss Emory and Miss Grindley with shyer flower stands as a small token of appreciation of their work as president and secretary of the Ladies’ Committee. _____

The Dunedin Green was in wonder! ul order considering the wear it was subjected to last season. Of course, the playing surface was a little heavy, as Mr Taylor wisely declines to cut the grass too close at the beginning of the season. Mr H. F. M. Mercer,, the president, extended a cordial 'welcome to all present, and Mrs and Miss Mercer superintended the serving afterwards of afternoon tea to members and visitors. There- was a very largo attendance of ladies. Eleven rinks were playing, and there were enough on tho bank to fill up a second time.

There was a good turn out at the Caledonian Green, and all present were pleased to find that tho president, Mr C. F. Greenslade, was able to attend and preside after a somewhat bad bout of illness. Mrs Greensladc rolled the first bowl, and after this play proceeded merrily. The ladies who presided at tho tea tables saw to it that all were supplied.

Roslyn Green presented quite a gala appearance when Mr Howard, tho president,

formally declared the green open after a brief address, the first bowl being sent up by Mrs Howard. Advantage was taken of the occasion to present Mr J. H. Mathieson, the secretary, with a silver entree dish suitably inscribed. The prettily situated Kaituna Green was formally opened by Mr Lambournc, the president, and, after a brief address, the first bowl was sent away by Mrs Lambourne and an enjoyable game followed. There was a good attendance on the Mornington Green, where Mr W. Neill, the president, mentioned the interesting fact that there wore 100 old boys from the Mornington School serving their King and country. He said the ladies’ club connected with the green had proved a great success.
