October 4. There is not a groat deal doing on the tracks at present. “Business fair” just about sums up the position. Most trainers hayo the best of their teams going*, all being desirous of getting bold of one of the big prizes offering at the spring meeting in November. Iho Cambridge Hunt meeting on the 25th inst. is also an object in view, many horses not class enough for Town Hall company being tuned up for the meeting. Old Okahau, who was one of our best ’chasers a few seasons ago, is being patched up for the Cjimbridigo meeting, but it is just a question whether he will reach there.
D. Moraghan tried Local Arch out over a mile one morning, and the Soult filly shaped well enough to remember the first time she steps out. At different stages she was assisted by Prince Soult and Tact, so that she had no chance of a breather on the way. Colonel Soult’s defeats in Australia have been costly to his admirers, who thought him a champion. He is to bo shipped straight back, and pex-haps may bo sent on to Riccarton to contest the New Zealand Cup. If so, ho will have a big pull over a lot of his opponents in that he is well seasoned'. Nicomar continues to shape well in his schooling efforts. Try Fluke struck the fence hard when schooling last week, and was lame afterwards. Ho has been on the easy list since. It is staled there is very little likelihood of Potoa being sent to run for the Now Zealand Cup. He is not too sound, and will most likely remain here for the shorter races at Ellerslic. D.J.C. COMMITTEE. A meeting of the D.J.C. Committee was hold on Thursday, Mr P. Miller presiding. Sergeant-major Caddie was granted the use of the Wingatui grounds as a camp for the 10th Infantry (60 or 70 men) for seven days from tho 16th October. Captain Shand, on behalf of tho Otago Hussars, wrote asking for tho use of the grounds for a camp for about 100 men from tho 4th to the 11th December. —Resolved to asit; if an earlier date could bo selected, and that both camps be under tho supervision of the Works Committee.
The Railways Traffic Manager notified that a special train would leave; Dunedin for Christchurch next Saturday night, carrying horses and passengers. As the Judicial Committee for the spring meeting Messrs Miller, Hanlon, Smith, Lough, and Christie wore appointed. It was resolved to admit returned soldiers free to the spring mooting. The Secretary of the Recruiting Committee was granted permission to pat up recruiting posters on the fence at the spring meeting. Throe new members were elected.
