WELLINGTON NOTES.

(From Oor Own Correspondent.) September 30. The Otaki Maori Racing Club hud a very successful mooting on Monday and Tuesday. The totalisator figures exceeded last year’s takings by £3OOO, which is very satisfactory in these times.

Some South Island-bred horses competed successfully. The Maiden Plato winner, Limpet, is trained at Porirua by J. H. Prosser for Mr R. Acton Adams, of Canterbury. She is a three-year-old filly by Varco— Savannah (half-sister to Ireland, who is still winning in the West). She was ridden by B. Deeley, whoso followers do not often get such a good price. The Porirua stable also started Tango (tho half-sister to Pavlova). She is very wayward, and bolted before the start, and took no part in the race. Papauira (Papakura—Mauira), runnerup to Limpet, scored on tho second day. The other winners included Record Breaker (Advance —Lake Placid), a half-brother to Frisco. Of the others Poarlform and Pall Mall may win races.

Montana (one of the best Elevations soon out) scored an easy win in tho Dominion Day Handicap. Ho was not produced on the second day, but will probably bo seen out at Napier Park on Saturday. Botanist g'readraill —Bonnie Brae), a stablemato of ontana, also scored on the first day. He nearly won tho open mile race on tho second day from end to end. Both of J. T. Jamieson’s horses were ridden by A. Oliver. Botanist (a cast off of Sir Geo. Clifford’s stable) is also in at Napier Park. Tho principal event on the opening day, formerly known as tho Dominion Handicap, is now called the Teono Makitonore

Memorial Stakes, after the late Mr J. R. M’Donald, for many years a prominent official of the club. Square Deal, a winner at Wanganui, and Uoid Souit were the fancies, but the winner turned up in Master Montoa, one of Mr E. S. Easton's Moutoa family. He was bred by ins owner, and sired by Sir Geo. M'Lean's Sarto from Beauta, by Apremont —Goosander, a halfsister to Gosling (dam of Depredation). The Martian mare Immer tried to win from end to end, and just failed in the last few strides. She did not run eo well the next day, and evidently cannot stand two severe races.

The steeplechase events appears to bo overdone, judging by some oi the fields that have taken part in these events recently. Master Strowan (Strowan—Artist mare), who claims the same colours as Master Moutoa, won on the first day from Naupata (a good jumper), who scored on the second clay. Rarewanui (winner of the Hurdle Race on the concluding day at Wanganui) was a competitor each day. Throe New Zealand Cup candidates in Pavlova, Sinapis, and Coldstream competed unsuccessfully in the sprint race each day, and Ohakwana (a cons.stent performer) beat Coldstream on the opening day, and Taringarnutu (a place-getter each day at Wanganui) scored on the second day. She did not start on the first day. The veteran Medallist was placed on the opening day. The President’s Handicap winner, Rone, also made her only appearance in that race, when she scored. She ran with one of her forelegs bandaged, but may pick up another race before the tracks get hard. The Charlemagne H mare Maltcgarde acted as runner-up to Montana and Arlington on the opening day. The latter won the same race last year. The second dav he ran second to Mystified (MystificationStepdaughter), a five-year-old sister to Mystonach, whose first success it was. Consistent form was shown by several competitors at the meeting. Four horses that ran second on the opening day scored on the second day. They were Naupata, Happiness (a stable mate of Ohakwana), Maltcgarde, and Papauira. October 2. Irnmer’s full sister (Pall Mall) was expected to win the Maiden Scurry at Horowhenua on Thursday, but she ~ could run only fourth. They were a pretty moderate lot. Pomeroy (Strowan —Pomegranate) secured the verdict. The Bombardo gelding Combustion ran two good races. Ho was lucky to beat Ally (Achilles —Hiko marc) in the Levin Hack Handicap, six furlongs. Later in the afternoon ho put up 71b penalty in the Mouterc Hack Handicap, and conceded the Now Zealand Cup candidate, Bronk Delaval, 301 b, and made a dead heat of it. Tiie M'Donald Memorial. s : x furlongs, a good thing for Pcronilla (the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes winner), ridden by her old pilot, C. Emerson. The Cup was easily the best race of the day, and brought out a good field for a race worth lOOsovs. Pavlova and Coldstream. (Prosser’s pair) were the favourites. Oliver tried to got the rail for the top-weight, and she was knocked back last. Immer tried to win from end to end, as at Otaki, but Square Deal got to her without difficulty three furlongs from home. It was a great race from the home turn to the winning post. In the last 50 yards Maniaroa shot out, and won by half a length. Imaroso, Rene, Master Moutoa, and Gold-stream were close behind Tangihou. Both Maniaroa and Tangihou are in the New Zealand Cup with the minimum weight. Maniaroa ran second in the Higgle Handicap the previous Saturday. He was in the New Zealand Cup last year, but, missed the acceptances. He ran second to Rmgforn in the Otaio Plate, and later was runner-up in the St. Andrew’s Handicap, both events being run over 12 furlongs. Tangihou ran in the nomination of Mr L. G. M’Donald, a son of Mr J. R. M’Donald, after whom the race won by Pcronilla was name. Lady Louisa, who is trained on the Horowhenua course, was the least-backed of the 11 runners. She toiled in the rear all the way. In the Higgle Handicap she finished a length behind Maniaroa and in front of Tangihou. Either the Wanganui or Horowhenua running was wrong. Horses are not machines. The other flat race went to Master Moutoa (winner of steeplechase events at Marton and He is useful, but beat a bad lot, bar Miss Kelly, who was racing out of her distance.
