WITH THE 16TH LANCERS
A TWICE-WOUNDED OFFICER. {From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, March 2.
Colonel C. L. K. Campbell, of the 16th Lancers, who was A.D.C. to General Babington in New Zealand, has again been wounded in action lately. Evidently this celebrated regiment had a severe fight, for the same list shows that a captain and four lieutenants were killed, a major died of wounds, and, besides Colonel Campbell, a captain and three lieutenants were wounded. Colonel Campbell was fij-st wounded in November, and he has been mentioned in despatches and received his brevet promotion. An officer of the 16th Lancers who is now on furlough says:—“Our regiment was ordered to occupy trenches only 20 yards from the German trenches on February 26., The trench which we were ordered to occupy appears to have been mined by the enemy, but the artful beggars let our fellows occupy the trench for 24 hours, thereby getting as many of our chaps in-as possible before they fired! it, and it was at daybreak on the 21st that a terrific explosion occurred, which killed five of our officers outright (another has since died) and wounded five others, besides killing and wounding a large number of the rank and file. The trench was completely blown in. Immediately after the explosion the Germans charged us, and our reserves, to whom I was attached, were called up, and assisted those of our poor fellows who remained to drive the enemy back, which was accomplished with considerable loss to them. We then had to re-trench, and we were in action for another 48 hours before being relieved. Our regiment was extremely hard hit, especially in officers.”
