SAWYER’S BAY.

June 7.—Last Monday a most successful social was held in the Presbyterian Church in connection with the Sabbath school. Owing to the unavoidable absence through illness of the Rev. A. Whyte, Mr Falconer (the student missionary) presided. The church was crowed, and proceedings commenced at 6.30 p.m. with the children’s tea. Two choirs—a juvenile and a senior—in charge of Mr Kettle provided musical items, Mrs L. Cleghorn played an organ solo, Miss Horn and Mr Booth contributed solos. Mrs Prattlcy and Mr Kettle a duet, and Mr Hutton gave a recitation. Mrs L. Cleghorn and Mr R. N. Finlay acted as accompanists. A spirited address on “A Child's Religion” was delivered by Mr Falconer, and the superintendent’s report showed the school to bo in a high state of efficiency. There wore over ICO children on the roll, and the staff numbered nine. The usual votes of thanks brought a very enjoyable and interesting evening to a close. Comforts for the Wounded.-—Last week tho young ladies of the district met in the school to devise ways and means to raise funds for tho patriotic movement to provide comforts for sick and wounded soldiers. A

Young Women’s Patriotic Club was formed, and it was decided to meet weekly. The ladies have started very energetically to knit and sew, and already good progress is reported. The Weather.—The winter season is on us again, but with the exception of a fpw days of N.E. drizzly .vain wo have had nothing to complain of. Keen frosts at night and bright sunshiny days have put us past Show Week, and now we look forward to learn what the turn of the day has in store lor us. The long, dark nights remind us of the fact that the electric light has not yet reached our district. Tho street to and from the station has much need of lighting, and it had been hoped that this would have boon an accomplished fact this winter. With Sawyer’s Bay connected, the whole of the harbour side from Dunedin to Port Chalmers would be lit up by electricity.
