LAKE COUNTY.
June 5. —Very hard frosts have been experienced during the week. Licensing.—The annual meeting of the Wakatipu .Licensing Committee was held at Queenstown on Wednesday last, and was attended by the whole ot the members— t viz.: Messrs 11. A. Young, S.M. (chairman), A. Ford, F. Jeffrey* G. F. Johnston, D. Macleod, and J. M’Mullan. The police reports wore satisfactory; but the Health Officer reported adversely on the sanitary arrangements existing in various hotels in Clyde, Cromwell, and Wanaka districts. After a lengthy meeting all applications wore granted, subject to certain improvements in several cases being attended to. It is only fair to state that the Health Officer has not yet visited Queenstown, Arrowtown, or the southern portion of the district, so that no report was received in regard to hotels in these districts. Wedding.—A quiet wedding was celebrated at Arrowtown on Tuesday last, the contracting parties being Miss Jane Miller, only daughter of Mr Jas Miller, Arrowtown, and Mr Walter Shaw, fourth son of Mr William Shaw, of Lochiel, Southland, and formerly of Lower Shotovcr. The ceremony was performed j by Mr Thomas Knight at the residence of the brides parents. The bride was given away by her father, and was attended by Miss Ida, Jenkins as bridesmaid. Mr John Shaw, brother of the bridegroom, acted as best man. After the ceremony the happy couple loft by motor for Clyde, en route to Dunedin, where the honeymoon is being spent. Golf.—Messrs Irvine, Murdoch, Brydone, and E. Jolly, members of the 'Cromwell Golf Club, visited Arrowtown on Thursday (King’s Birthday) and played a friendly match with four Arrow players. The match resulted in a rather easy win tor the visitors. Arrow was represented by Dr Brown, Messrs A. J. Campbell, A. G. Lea, and A. S. 8011. The latter was the only Arrow mam successful in getting a " Football.—Owing to the number of players that have left to serve their country at the front, it is hardly likely there will be much football played in the district this season. At the annual meeting of the Wakatipu Sub-union, held m ■Queenstown on Saturday last, it was decided, in the event of the clubs not being able to raise teams, to arrange soyen-a-sido tournaments for some patriotic object. The first match, which was arranged to-be played in Queenstown on Wednesday last between Queenstown and Country Pirates, fell through, neither club being able to raise a team. Deaths.—The death took place at Invercargill last week of Mr Thomas Williams, a former resident of Macotcwn, wlioye no had resided for over 50 years. Deceased was a native of Wales, and was 78 years of age. He had no relatives in this country. —Ah Yip, the Chinaman who was admitted to the Arrow Hospital on the 19th ult., suffering from severe burns received through falling into a fire m his hut, died on the 27th ult. As deceased was’ subject to epileptic fits, an inquest .was not deemed necessary. Contracts. —At a sub-committee meeting of the Lake County Council, held in Arrowtown on last, the following tenders were dealt with: —Contract Ho. 447 (widening road at Crown Terrace)! Thompson and Sons, £6B 17s (accepted); D. Mackie, £BO. Contract No. 448 (widening on Baird’s Hill) : C. Sloper, £39 14s (accepted); James Cowan, £45; Neilson and Thompson, £49 ss. ~ To the Front.—Mr Alexander Webb, son of Mr James Webb, Arrowtown, has been accepted for service in the Seventh Reinforcements, and leaves for Trentham next week. The following young men from this district have also volunteered: —Messrs D. Simmers, F. M'Bride, Smith, and Lowry (Queenstown), T. Wilkie (Frankton), Hugh Hunter (Malaghan’s), and James Ritchie (Macetown). Belgian Relief Fund.—The different parts of the district have during the past few weeks made a liberal response to help to relievo the distress in Belgium. A very successful patriotic demonstration. in l Queenstown on the 25th ult. resulted in. a sum of £l4l being realised. A conceit hold on Arrowtown on the 28th brought in over £SO. The Lake County Council at its last*meeting voted £2OO. A carnival is to hold in Arrowtown on the 30th inst., and already a large sum _ (about £150) has been collected. A social and dance is also to he held at Crown Terraco on the 18th for the same cause. Literary and Debating Society.—The Arrow Literary and Debating Society opened its session on Tuesday evening with a debate on the question “ Do New Zealanders devote too much time to sport The affirmative was taken by Messrs Baity and Knight, and the negative by Mr Lea. Others taking part in the debate, wore Dr Brown and Messrs Macleod, Ross, and Bell. On a show of hands the result was; Affirmative, 4; negative, 19.
