BROKEN HILL SMELTERS

SYDNEY, June 1

From the 7th inst., the directors of the Broken Hill companies,-operating in conjunction with the Port Pirie smelters, have decided to temporarily reduce the output by closing the concentrating mills on alternate weeks. Between 4000 and 5000 men are affected. A special meeting of the Amalgamated Miners’ Association discussed the situation, and also the demand of the Port Pirie men for an increase of wages. It was decided to ask for a conference with the owners.

One of the chief factors causing unemployment at Broken Hill and Port Pirie is the shortness of freight to cany lead to Vladivostock, whence it is shipped to the Russian arsenals, the Russian army being a very large consumer of the Barrier lead.
