CLYDESDALE HORSE SOCIETY

The- fourth annual report of the Clydesdale Horse Society states that the council is gratified at tho steady and increasing support accorded the society by the agricultural community. The membership now stands at 457, and tho accumulated fund at £319 4s. During the year 22 district agricultural and pastoral societies were affiliated to the society. The bronze and silver medals won in 1913-1914 under this scheme were posted to the secretaries of the affiliated societies, and have been much admired. The Wright, Stephenson 50-guinoa challenge cup was competed for at tho Otago A. and P. Society’s stallion show in September, 1914. and was awarded to Mr James Patrick, Lee Creek, Outrara, for Scotland’s Conqueror (imp.). _ This is Mr Patrick’s third consecutive win. The trophy has to be won four time only with different animals before it becomes tho absolute property of tho winner. The Union Steam Ship Company’s challenge cup, of the same value, was competed for at the Egrnont A. and P. Society’s show at Hawera in November, 1914, and was awarded to Mr Ernest Short, Parorangi, Feilding, for Silloth Lady (imp.), G.Y.L.C. This is Mr Short’s second win. At tho time of writing last report. 318 animals had been inspected and passed. A considerable number more have been examined since then. Tho details are: Life certificates (G.V.L.C.), 184; provisionally certified (P.C. with date) 173, in all 357. The movement in favour of tho formation of breed societies and the registration of pedigree grows apace. In New Zealand the shorthorn breeders, following tho lead of the sheep, Hereford, and dairy cattle, and Clydesdale men, arc presently engaged considering the constitution of a breed society. The latest recruit is Sir,nth Africa, in which colony a Clydesdale Horse Society, recently formed, is meeting with much support. Tho Clydesdale Horse, Society of the Commonwealth of Australia has opened offices in Melbourne, and at a meeting of the Now South Wales Clydesdale breeders, held during Sydney show week, it was enthusiastically resolved to co-operate with the Victorian breeders. In Scotland, although tbo export trade, owing to tho dangers of shipping, has reached almost vanishing point, the homo trade is remarkably active. The prices realised at public auction lor geldings

ranged from 70gs to HOgs. 1 here is also a brisk demand for mares, a two-year-old filly by Dunure Footprint, out of the fine black mare Elaine, realising what we think ,s a world’s record at the age, £1600; anti the Horse Breeders’ Associations are vying with each other in hiring stallions to travel districts in some cases three years ahead of time.
