AUSTRALIAN MEAT SHORTAGE.
STATEMENT BY. VICTORIAN

MELBOURNE, June 3
In the Victorian Legislative Assembly the Hon. F. W. Hagelthorn, dealing with the meat shortage, announced that exporters had decided to make available all meat deemed to be in excess of Imperial requirements at prices slightly higher than those arranged as per the original Government agreement. The Victorian Government was cabling these prices to the Imperial Government, and was also representing that in view of the shortage in Victoria the position should be reconsidered.
The export season had practically terminated, ho continued, and the meat at present held in Victoria was primarily needed for local consumption. The exporters had agreed to supply locally at the following rates : —First-quality beef, maximum price, 6d per lb; mutton, sgd per lb; lamb, 6£d per lb. It was pointed out that this was 16s per 1031 b above the Imperial Government arrangement.
ACTION IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA ADELAIDE. June 3.
Owing to the shortage of meat, the Government has decided to slop ail export. Prices have jumped between 2d and 3d per lb.
