GRAIN TRAFFIC
(Fnou Oitk Own Coubesponuent.) INVERCARGILL, June 6. The grain season, so far as the railway* are concerned, is now in full swing, and considerable quantities daily have to b® handled. The season this year is much, later than last, owing to the harvest having been retarded by unfavourable weather conditions. By this time last year the grain-carrying season was practically over. It has to be noted that last year the quantity of grain carried over th( Southland section of the New Zaeland railways was the lowest for very many ybars, but this year an obvious revival has place. This undoubtedly was owing t< the request of the Prime Minister, whe* war broke out, that farmers should sow move cereals. Better yields also this yea* will cause the total at the end of the season to disclose a substantial increase. Notwithstanding the reported backward* ness or shyness of the farmers to part witl holdings, it is obvious that a goodly number of them have alreadv done so. Las!
week 42,395" sacks were-, dealt with, as against 6621 sacks for the corresponding week of last year. The total to date is 301,725 sacks, as against 233,319 sacks for ihe corresponding weeks of last year.
